bologna sandwich

I first made this bologna sandwich on a lazy afternoon when I wanted something nostalgic, comforting, and a little indulgent, and the moment the bread hit the hot pan, my kitchen filled with that buttery, toasted aroma I grew up loving. I remember standing there, flipping the sandwich, listening to the gentle sizzle, and smiling because it felt like pure comfort food therapy. When I finally took that first bite, warm and crisp on the outside with savory bologna inside, I knew this simple sandwich deserved a proper place in my kitchen rotation.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices white or sandwich bread
  • 2–3 slices beef or chicken bologna
  • 1 slice cheddar or American cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon mayonnaise (optional)

I’ve tried this sandwich with many variations, and I can honestly say the bread and butter matter more than you think. I usually stick to classic white bread because it crisps beautifully, but you can use brioche or sandwich bread if that’s what you have. Don’t skip the butter—it’s what gives you that golden, crunchy exterior. I like cheddar for more flavor, but American cheese melts perfectly, so choose based on your mood.(See the next page below to continue…)
