– 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
– ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
– 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 2 large eggs
– 1 cup buttermilk
– ½ cup vegetable oil
– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
– 1 cup hot brewed coffee
– Optional: Chocolate frosting and coffee beans for garnish
Equipment Needed
– Two 9-inch round cake pans
– Mixing bowls
– Whisk and spatula
– Measuring cups and spoons
– Cooling rack
– Oven
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While that’s warming up, I grab my two round cake pans and grease them with a bit of butter, making sure to dust the insides with flour. That little step is a lifesaver when it comes to removing the cakes later. In a large mixing bowl, I combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, whisking everything together until it’s nicely blended. Then comes the fun part—mixing in the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. I mix it until smooth and luscious, and then slowly pour in that hot brewed coffee. The batter will be quite runny, but don’t worry – that’s exactly what we want! (See the next page below to continue steps…)
