Ingredients
– 6 to 8 cups of peeled and sliced apples (I love using Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for a balanced flavor)
– 1 cup sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of your apples)
– 1 tablespoon lemon juice (this adds brightness)
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– ½ teaspoon nutmeg (optional, but it adds a warm depth)
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1 cup rolled oats
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– 1 cup brown sugar, packed
– ½ cup unsalted butter, softened and cut into pieces
Equipment Needed
– Mixing bowls
– 9×13 inch baking dish
– Whisk or fork
– Peeler (for the apples)
– Measuring cups and spoons
– Oven
Step-by-Step Instructions
To start, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it’s warming up, prepare your apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into thin, even pieces. I usually prefer to use a mix of tart and sweet apples to create a lovely balance of flavor. Toss them in a large mixing bowl with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until they are well coated. Once the apples are nicely mixed, pour them into your greased baking dish, spreading them out evenly. This layer gives such a wonderful aroma! (See the next page below to continue steps…)
